INVOLVEMENT
2011-Present

SCJ team members have been providing municipal planning services for the Airway Heights community for several years.

The partnership started with creation of a master plan for the US 2 corridor that bisects the town. That plan outlined transformative change to the corridor, based on a growing community desire for a better-looking, safer arterial – something reflecting the residents’ hopes for their town’s future. That plan’s recommendations became the basis for the City’s subsequent work, hiring us to prepare a downtown master plan and an industrial subarea plan.

In 2018, organizational transitions left the community development director and planning function unstaffed, and we’ve been working since then to help reshape the City’s permitting process, redefine the Planning Commission’s role, and integrate development review into the larger scheme of the City’s broader policy initiatives.

The City has also hired us to prepare a public art strategy, enabling the City to take the initiative in reviewing and placing public art, beautifying the US 2 corridor and coherently expressing the community’s stories.

STAFF STORY

“The City of Airway Heights is quickly changing and growing with the development of the Amazon fulfillment center, the ongoing increase in military personnel from the nearby air force base, new housing developments, and normal population growth.

This growth impacts the city and requires hands-on planning services to address the short- and long-range planning needs of the area. It’s amazing to be part of this diverse work that will positively impact the city by addressing these major changes.”
