Taylor Way is a major arterial within the Port of Tacoma’s Industrial Center not originally designed to accommodate the truck traffic it sees today, carrying 4-10 million tons of freight a year. SCJ partnered with the City of Tacoma to design improvements along the corridor. SCJ and subconsultants split the design work with the City in a unique model. Key proposed improvements included replacing asphalt with concrete designed to heavy haul standards, evaluating rail crossings (removing several and upgrading remaining ones), widening the SR 509/Taylor intersection with added turn and thru lane capacity, and adding dedicated turn and overflow lanes. The improvements will reduce congestion; improve freight delivery and driver turnaround times; decrease idling, emissions, and fuel use; and improve emergency response times and safety. The design and construction included state and federal grants funding with local match and City utility funds.
