The City of Olympia’s west side is a regional shopping and services destination. It boasts many health care facilities, including a hospital, as well as surrounding commercial and residential areas. Everything is served by one key interchange that is regularly, significantly congested.

The City partnered with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to evaluate access improvements to US 101 on Olympia’s west side. SCJ led preparation of traffic operations and safety analysis, completed an Interchange Justification Report, and managed public outreach and stakeholder coordination efforts.

Building on a study completed in 2010, SCJ conducted an alternatives analysis using WSDOT’s Least Cost Planning principles. We refined preliminary design concepts and presented an option that will reduce the overall cost of the improvement package by half, while meeting all of the original goals for the project.
